Scam Alert

Fraudsters are scamming innocent people and the threat to the property market is very real. Scammers have been intercepting property payments by hacking into the email of people involved in the transactions and tricking home buyers into transferring funds to them instead of the appropriate parties. With instant access to information and electronic communication, the age of technology continues to present a rise in illegal activity. Property is the biggest investment you make - be vigilant and verify all credentials to avoid becoming a victim of fraudulent activity.

Our advice is the following:

  • before proceeding with any transaction ensure your estate agent is registered with the Estate Agency Affairs Board and has a valid Fidelity Fund Certificate
  • use a reputable conveyancing attorney
  • request FICA verifications of both parties
  • read the emails and email addresses to and from the relevant role-players during your property transaction
  • ensure you have good communication between your real estate agent and conveyancing attorney
  • all communication must be documented between all parties
  • when making substantial payments double check all the banking details and verify them with the bank
  • important documents should always be signed in person and verification of bank details completed
  • should anything look a little suspicious contact your banking institution
